PGY III

PGY-3 residents have the most flexible schedule. They also continue to increase their supervisory role within the residency. They have continuity clinic three half days a week and take call an average of every fifth to sixth night. Some call is taken from home.

Dermatology2 weeks

The resident works one on one with the dermatologist mostly seeing office patients. The resident has the opportunity to see a variety of dermatological pathology plus perform numerous surgical procedures, especially excisional biopsies. A resident may selective an alternative experience if felt to better meet overall educational goals.

Electives18 weeks

Residents select and plan their own electives. These may include anesthesia, wound care, ENT, Infectious Disease, Hospital medicine, Hospice, Urology, Oncology, and Neurology to name a few.

Emergency Medicine4 weeks

While in the Emergency Department, the resident works directly with the ED physicians managing a variety of cases, including acute MIs, lacerations, asthma exacerbations, and a fortitude of trauma cases of various degrees (Wyoming Medical Center is a Level II trauma center with Life Flight service for most of the state).

Family Practice Inpatient6 weeks

See the description under the PGY-1 year. In the third year, the resident takes on the supervisory role for this service as FPI - Senior.

Family Practice Obstetrics Senior6 weeks

During this rotation the resident manages the FM OB/gyn/peds inpatient team. The inpatient team provides services for WFP Clinic OB, gyn, peds and nursery patients, along with OB and gyn patients admitted to WMC who do not have a primary care/OB provider. The FPO Senior is expected to oversee all aspects of care for patients on their service and manage the activity of junior residents and medical students on the team. In addition to inpatient responsibilities, they will have OB Intake Clinics at the WFP Clinic, along with the Continuity clinics. Residents may serve as FPO Senior after successful completion of a high-risk OB rotation in Spokane, WA.

Geriatrics4 weeks

This rotation focuses on the care of elderly patients in various case sites throughout our community. These may include working with our Geriatric Assessment Team, nursing home experience, Hospice, occupational and physical therapy, and wound care

MSK 4 weeks

The resident will work one on one with a local Orthopedic provider. This experience includes clinic visits with patients with orthopedic complaints, splinting and casting experience and OR time. Additionally, the resident will have training in Osteopathic Manipulation with the core Osteopathic Family Medicine team.

Pediatrics (ER) - Denver4 weeks

This rotation takes place at the University of Colorado Children's Hospital in Denver. The resident spends four weeks seeing patients in the pediatric emergency room. Lodging is provided in Denver

Advanced Family Medicine 6 weeks

This rotation will provide focused experience and training in advanced care areas of Family Medicine. This training will include experience in common and advanced family medicine outpatient procedures including: Osteopathic Manipulation, Exercise Stress Testing, Reproductive Health (IUD, endometrial biopsy, vasectomy), Colposcopy and Dermatologic and Orthopedic Procedures. Training in areas of advanced medical management includes: Medication Assisted Treatment of Opioid Use Disorders, Anticoagulation Management, and training in the completion of DOT certification physicals. The resident also receives Practice Management experience with involvement in several committees and special programs, including our Controlled Substance Initiative, Patient Relations Committee, Quality Improvement within the PCMH Model and Performance Management.
